Feb 23-27

 Hello Second Grade Families,

I haven't quite sent home all of the things Mrs. Toepfer graded from quarter 2, because of our snow day. I will get through it tomorrow and get it all sent home for you to see!

Please remember to send your child with a healthy snack each day! I just stocked up on a couple backups for the cupboard, because it was empty. If your child forgets sometimes, please send us a backup to keep at school and we will share backup snacks like pretzels, popcorn, or graham crackers with those who forget. Most students are remembering their snack every day!

Upcoming Dates

Fang from the Timberrattlers will visit on Friday, February 27th to introduce our spring reading incentive program! (see sheets coming home on Friday, 2/27 to help your child earn a ticket to an upcoming baseball game!)

Read Across America Week: March 2-6 (see upcoming flyer for dress up days!)

Homework:

~ Math Sheet (4-7)
~Read about 10 minutes per night - Please continue to ask your child to reread the decodable texts that come home on Thursdays. Last week, I wrote on them in pink highlighter for you to notice and set aside for rereading.
~Check planners for notes and reminders

What are we learning?

Character Strong: Week 1 of Honesty. Newsletter Here

ELA

Module 7 - Everyone Has a Story (week 2 - we also have a few assessments I want to squeeze in from last week that we missed due to the snow day)

HELLO, FAMILY!

Over the next three weeks, our class will be learning about how people’s life experiences shape and create their life stories.

We will read biographies about people who overcame obstacles to make their dreams come true. Children will create timelines of their own lives that show special memories and accomplishments. Children will also write a story about an imaginary character’s adventures.

BRING IT HOME! Learning fun for the whole family!

Big Idea WordsReinforce these important topic words when you are reading or talking with your child: account, achieve, hurdle.

Try to incorporate questions like these into everyday conversations:

·        What is your account of what happened today?

·        What did you achieve today that you’re proud of?

·        What could you do to overcome this hurdle?

Let’s Read Together. Make a special time and place to read with your child every day.

During this module about important people, try these activities during your reading time together:

·        Identify events and experiences that are important to the characters you are reading about.

·        Talk about how everyone goes through tough times. Make a connection to a tough time a character has.

·        Point out words the author uses to help you form a picture in your mind.

Word Play. Play with words to help develop skills that are important for reading.

Week 1: Word Search

Find words in your daily reading that have a vowel-consonant-consonant-vowel pattern. For each word, say the word and jump where the syllables should be divided. For example: rab/bit.

Week 2: In the Barn, I Played with Yarn

Reinforce the ar vowel sound by making up amusing sentences with these word pairs: car/far, bark/dark, art/tart.

Week 3: Homophones

Together, make a list of all the homophones (hair/hare, pair/ pear, toe/tow) that you can think of in one minute. And . . . GO!

Math

Subtract from 100, 200, and ungroup to subtract 2-digit numbers like 45-28 =

I am going to start working on skills identified by our midyear assessments with small groups and individuals. These might be skills that we aren't working on in class, but will still be important! Example: telling time, or working with data, story problems, or fractions.

I am also hoping to introduce an online math game called Prodigy. Students will be allowed to play it a few times per week as one of their math choices.

Social Studies

We will finish our "Me on the Map" booklets and read them. We will take an assessment about our place in the world. Students should know their continent, country, state, county, and town. We have been practicing this and they will use their booklet as a resource on the assessment.

February sure flew right by! I am hoping to get back into taking a few pictures to post to keep our blog exciting AND to get back into using the parent side of Class Dojo.

We are very close to earning our next Class Dojo point reward!

Feb 16-20

 Hello Second Grade Families,

You will notice lots of graded work from Second quarter and early third quarter coming home this week. Mrs. Toepfer saved it all for me to look through. So, some of this is older assessments, but still helpful for you to see how your child did, and might inform you as you consider how to help at home. Thank you for coming to conferences and being patient with me as I get reacquainted with all of the students' needs again!

Upcoming Dates

Tuesday, February 17th: Book Orders Due! See the side of this page to access the online book orders!

(below is the note from Scholastic in case you haven't ordered yet but want to get started! I realize, many of you just went to the book fair!)

Dear families,

This year, our class is excited to read with Scholastic Book Clubs! It’s a great way to build up your child’s book collection at home and help them improve their reading skills. And when you shop with Clubs, your orders earn points I can redeem for books and other classroom supplies we need.

Here’s how it works: I’ll send home flyers throughout the year. If you decide to place an order, you can do that through our class ordering page. Your books will arrive at school about 10 days after I submit our classroom order.

By teaming up with Scholastic, we’ll help your child become a more confident, independent reader—and we’ll build a classroom library all of my students are excited to explore!

Order due date: 02/17/26
