Character Strong: Week 3 of Creativity

ELA

Module 10: Many Cultures, One World

We will not have much more time for our lessons in module 10, but we will have a brief reading assessment, finish up our work with learning lessons from stories, and work with the /aw/ sound in words like paw and haul.

Math

We will work with fractions, introducing multiplication and division in unit 7 which is a very visual unit to help students begin developing and understanding for some third grade math concepts!

Please help your child practice telling time and counting money this summer!

Social Studies

Students will finish their Tribe posters and share them with the class. This was a group project and helped us a lot with working on cooperation skills!

Have a wonderful summer!

May 26-28

 Hello Second Grade Families,

Only 3 days of school this week and one is our field trip!

Here is the note I will send home with the students as a reminder to be ready for our field trip Wednesday!

Our field trip is Wed. 5/27!!!!!

We suggest sending:

  • unchecked

    sun block

  • unchecked

    a hat

  • unchecked

    light coat

  • unchecked

    plastic water bottle

  • unchecked

    snack

  • unchecked

Backpack to keep it all organized!

Your child might need:

  • unchecked

If you signed up to bring lunch from home, please make sure it has a few snacks in it.

  • unchecked

Electronic devices (non-internet) are allowed but we will not be responsible for them and they should not leave the bus.

  • unchecked

If they bring a baseball glove, please make sure their name is on it.

We cannot bring any food or drink into the game- backpacks will be checked if we bring them in.  They are allowed to bring in one empty water bottle to fill at the bubblers.  You do not have to send any money with your child for this trip.  That being said, there is a $2 slide and a $1 spin game as well as a huge free sandbox, climber, hill to roll down and a waffle ball play area.  They also have a concession stand that sells food and a merch store.  Sometimes there is also an air bouncy house/slide/pitching game for $2 each or $7 unlimited wrist band.  They could not guarantee those air things would be set up though- it depends on the wind and the number of employees available for it.

Thank you!

Mrs. Brotz and Mrs. Naparalla

Character Strong: Week 2 of Creativity

ELA

Module 10: Many Cultures, One World

HELLO, FAMILY!

Over the next three weeks, our class will be learning about the different cultures and traditions of people all around the world.

We will read about the ways that people celebrate and honor their heritage, and we’ll see a video of the different lunches that children enjoy in other countries. Children will also write a thank-you letter to someone who shared information about their culture.

BRING IT HOME! Learning fun for the whole family!

Big Idea Words. Reinforce these important topic words when you are reading or talking with your child: culture, harmony, heritage.

Try to incorporate questions like these into everyday conversations:

·        What culture would you like to learn more about?

·        What are some ways we can all live in harmony with each other?

·        What do you know about our family’s heritage?

Let’s Read Together. Make a special time and place to read with your child every day.

During this module about world cultures, try these activities during your reading time together:

·        Snap your fingers when culture is mentioned in the text. This could be customs, traditions, food, art, music, or clothing.

·        Talk about how characters or people in the text learn from each other’s differences.

·        As you read, talk about new words you encounter and how you can figure out what they mean.

Word Play. Play with words to help develop skills that are important for reading.

Week 1: Prefix Practice

Use a dictionary to find words with the prefix mis–. Remove the prefix and see how the word meanings change.

Week 2: Fun with Syllables

Write multisyllabic words on slips of paper. Draw a slip of paper and hop forward the number of syllables in each word. Designate a finish line and play until someone wins.

Week 3: Tic-Tac-Toe

Make a tic-tac-toe board. Write a word with ei, ey, y, or ey in each square, leaving out the letters that spell the vowel sound. To mark X or O in a square, players must write the missing letters and say the word. For example: w _ _ gh, weigh.

Math

We will come close to finishing unit 6. I don't think I will have them take the unit assessment- we have had many assessments lately and I think I have all the information I need to complete report cards!

Please help your child practice telling time and counting money this summer!

Social Studies

We have a Native American Tribe poster project that we have started and will cooperate with a team to finish this week and early next week! Each team of 3 students is responsible for researching, creating a poster, and presenting on one Native American tribe.

May 18-22

 Hello Second Grade Families,

Please look for, this week, your child's writing prompts from fall and spring to see their growth as a writer this year! We will look at these together tomorrow morning so they can review and notice their own growth. I will also be sending the STAR reports home so you can see your child's growth in STAR Math and STAR Reading when we finish those!

Upcoming Dates

May 27th: Field trip to Barlow Planetarium and Timber Rattlers game! Please return yellow field trip form and background check forms that I sent last week to chaperone volunteers.
June 4: Last day of school for students

Homework:

~ Math Sheet 6-
~Read about 15 minutes per night - Please continue to ask your child to reread the decodable texts that come home on Thursdays. Sorry, we didn't have any last Thursday! I am working on end of year testing and that has slowed our lessons down a bit.
~Check planners for notes and reminders.

May 4-8

Hello Second Grade Families,

With all of the sickness going around, we are nearly out of Kleenex! Please send a box if you can spare one. I know the specials teachers are low too, so if I get more than what we need for the month I’ll pass a box on to music, art, etc.

Upcoming Dates

May 4-8: Teacher Appreciation week! If you are looking for ideas to help your child appreciate their MANY teachers, here is a website with printable cards and more! Our public library can help you print if needed! I have also put out some supplies for students to make thank-you/appreciation cards during our morning literacy rotations.

I don’t usually share a classroom wishlist, but our classroom budgets will need to be tighter this year, so I created an amazon wishlist! If you are interested in donating to our classroom in the coming month, take a look!

Thank you to the anonymous donor(s) who already purchased 4 items off the wishlist! ❤️ It was the best surprise to come home to on Friday after a long week!

We will also visit the forest this week and study the forest ecosystem. I have a fun forest products lesson that relates science, history, and our school forest coming up! Hoping to squeeze it in before we go to the forest or right after.
