Week of 11/10 - 11/14

Hello Second Grade Families,

First, let me introduce myself.  I am Joan Toepfer. I started this week as the long term sub in Mrs. Naparalla's class.  I will be here until she returns in February.  I am a retired Special Education teacher. I worked at Horlick High School in Racine Unified School District for 16 years.  My husband and I moved to Montello last year and I've been subbing in the local school districts. There were a few bumps in the road this first week while I become comfortable with the schedule and curriculum (the students kept a count of how many mistakes I made, haha).  All in all, the week went well.  I am excited to provide a safe, engaging, and fun environment in which all students will learn to the best of their ability.  Feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.  My email is joantoep@princeton.k12.wi.us.

Important!!!

Report cards were sent home on Friday.  If you have not checked folders, please do so.  Sign the envelope on the "1st Quarter" line and return to school, please.  You may keep the report card and review with your student.

Character Strong: Week 1 of GRATITUDE- NEWSLETTER HERE!

ELA

Module 4: Once Upon a Time (we are in week 1)

HELLO, FAMILY!

Over the next three weeks, our class will be learning about stories that teach valuable life lessons.

We will read many kinds of stories, from classic fairy tales to modern retellings, and even an informational text about how to appreciate a story. Children will also write a story about an imaginary friend or place.

BRING IT HOME! Learning fun for the whole family!

Big Idea Words. Reinforce these important topic words when you are reading or talking with your child: moral, relate, version.

Try to incorporate questions like these into everyday conversations:

·        What is the moral of a story you know?

·        Which character do you relate to most?

·        What is your version of what happened?

Let’s Read Together. Make a special time and place to read with your child every day.

During this module about storytelling, try these activities during your reading time together:

·        Tell which characters you’d like to be friends with and why.

·        Talk about how a lesson that a character learns in a story can help you.

·        Read the dialogue in a different voice for each character.

Word Play. Play with words to help develop skills that are important for reading.

Week 1: Add –s or –es

Write these words in a list: clap, click, box, smash. Add –s or –es to each word. Now make your own list!

Week 2: All Jobs of y

Look for words that include y in your daily reading. Then, categorize each word based on the sound the y stands for (short i, long i, or long e).

Week 3: Double the Fun!

Make a list of words that need a double consonant when –ing is added, such as hop, swim, hug, and drum. Write down each word, double the consonant, and add –ing. Now act them out!

Math

This week we will continue with our work in Unit 2. In Unit 2, we will continue to work with money, addition and subtraction with larger numbers, and other number concepts.

Science

This week we will draw our own bird feeder design to attract a specific type of bird.  Then we will build a prototype of the bird feeder using available materials.
